Examination Board: OCR

Critical Thinking is different from other subjects at A-level. Rather than three units to make up the AS qualification, the subject requires only two. Rather than facts, candidates learn to analyse and evaluate ideas and arguments, and how to construct clear, logical and coherent lines of reasoning. The two modules are on Credibility of Evidence and Assessing & Developing Argument and are taken in two ninety-minute examinations.

Candidates who have already obtained the AS in Critical Thinking can take two additional units to achieve the full A-level. They are on Resolution of Dilemmas and Critical Reasoning and again are taken as ninety-minute examinations.

Critical Thinking and Higher Education

This course develops skills that are useful to study of other subject areas and also important for success in Higher Education. All university admissions offices recognize the value of the subject in supporting effective work in other A-level subjects and as a preparation for university study.
