Students take part in activities celebrating different cultures

Brooke Weston Academy held a Culture Day in Term 5 giving students and staff the opportunity to share their heritage as well as learn about different nationalities.

Tiffany Moyo, one of our diversity leaders for this year, had a vision that we could make Culture day bigger than the Culture Week we held back in 2023. She said in her interview presentation, ‘If I was given the opportunity to be the Diversity Leader, I will love to put forward the idea of a Culture Day in which students will dress in their cultural attire for the whole day, and we will have an assembly celebrating culture.’

Sadly, Tiffany passed away earlier this year, and our students dedicated the Culture Day Celebration to her memory, making her dream a reality. The event was a powerful reminder of the impact one student’s vision can have on an entire community.

Culture Day was packed with activities that allowed students to explore and share their heritage while learning about others:

  • Global Flavours in the BWA Restaurant: Throughout the week, students enjoyed a diverse menu featuring dishes from around the world.
  • Door Decorating Competition: Tutor groups transformed their classroom doors to reflect their own cultures and an “adopted” country, with each year group representing a different continent.
  • Cultural Dress Day: Students proudly wore traditional attire or the colours of their national flags, showcasing the rich tapestry of backgrounds within our school.
  • Charity Fundraising: Students donated £1 to participate, raising funds for three global charities—Medical Aid for Palestinians, Global Aid Network UK, and the British Red Cross. This event marked the final fundraiser of the year, bringing the total raised by BWA students to an incredible £5,654.37.
  • Celebration Assemblies: students from the Charity, Diversity and Wellbeing committee prepared a celebration assembly and all students visited this throughout the day.

A highlight of the day, the assemblies featured:

  • Energetic Year 10 student hosts
  • Moving poetry from Year 8
  • A Year 7 flute solo and samba drum performance
  • A dazzling dance routine by Year 12 students
  • Contributions from the Brooke Weston Book Club Elective

Thank you to Music Lead, Ms. Jackson who led the musical and dance performances, which had the audience clapping, cheering, and dancing in their seats.

Lead of Culture, Ethos and Wellbeing, Mrs Hallybone, said, ‘It has been an utter privilege to help our incredible students bring Tiffany Moyo's dream into reality. When Mrs. Jeyes and I interviewed Tiff for the role of Diversity Leader, we were blown away by her passion and vision for how we could celebrate diversity in the BWA community.

‘The day also raised funds for global charities, pushing our yearly fundraising total up to £5654.37. I am beyond proud of all that the students have achieved and happy to have facilitated the students' hard work and Tiff's vision. We are so lucky to have the kindest and most caring students here at Brooke Weston Academy. They make my job so easy! Every penny changed lives, raised awareness and had a positive impact.’

Culture Day at BWA was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful expression of unity, remembrance, and the strength of student voice. Tiffany’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations at Brooke Weston Academy.
