Students visit College of Food in Birmingham

A group of Year 10 GCSE students visited the University College of Food in Birmingham, one of the countries leading universities for food courses as part of their food technology GCSE preparation.

The college offers a range of different courses from chef training, baking and chocolate skills to culinary science and product development and boasts an international reputation for its outstanding college courses and university degrees.

During the day the students took part in a number of practical and scientific activities including how to make a flapjack healthier and what effects different ingredients have on a product, which saw them test fizzy drinks and biscuit bars to see the results of having more or less sugar or fat had on the end result.

They also received information about the university and the types of courses that are on offer, and a talk from a nutritionist about how manufacturers manipulate their packaging to make a product seem healthier that it is.

Food Technology teacher Mrs Wendy Wykes said ‘This is the third year that we have taken students to UCB and it is always a huge success. It is extremely useful for students to see how a university works and the range of courses on offer. It really helped them to take part in scientific experiments, as this is something they will do as part of their GCSE.

‘A few of the students have expressed an interest in going to the college in the future and I think the day opened their eyes to the different courses which are available to them.’
