Students receive certificates for Reading Leaders scheme

Brooke Weston Sixth Formers who were specially trained to mentor younger students with their reading have been presented with accreditation certificates in recognition of their work. The students underwent a Reading Matters training course and completed a series of assessment tasks before completing a minimum of five hours’ worth of one-to-one reading support with a reading partner.

The scheme has been running successfully at Brooke Weston for several years and is administered by Reading Matters and co-ordinated by Mrs Childs. She presented the students with their Level 2 accreditation in ‘Supporting Reading Skills’.

Well done to Alexandra Allport, Samantha Bristow, Shannon Clarke, Amy Dunn, Ana-Maria Ianus, Tsitsi Mugayi, Vanessa Mumba, Tho-Qui Nguyen, Georgia Pringle, Jennariece Robson, Emma Schofield, Katherine Searle, Ellie Walker, Ross Ward and Erin Wootton.

Mrs Childs said: ‘This is a very valuable scheme as our students are given strategies and ideas to use with the younger students and it is particularly useful if they are considering a career in teaching or would like an additional skill to use on their personal statements for university applications. The students tailor the reading sessions to the ability and interest of their reading partners and they have had a very positive outcome. I would like to thank them for their time and encouragement.’
