BWTSA runs Festival of Reading in Wisbech

The Brooke Weston Teaching School has run a Festival of Reading, training students to become Reading Ambassadors in readiness for a further conference in November.

It is the first time that the two-pronged initiative has run in Wisbech and the fully trained Reading Ambassadors will provide support for other students at school level and help to raise the profile of reading, both in schools and within their families and communities.

Students and staff from 14 schools attended the Festival of Reading at The Secret Garden. The Year 3 and 4 students took part in a range of outdoor activities including map reading to develop their language and communication skills.

Cristina Taboada-Naya, Director of the Brooke Weston Teaching School Alliance, said: ‘The activities were linked to developing their oracy, communication and comprehension skills and the event was to develop them into Reading Ambassadors. It was a great collaborative time and very useful for the schools to get together. Although it was very wet weather over both days that didn’t dampen their enthusiasm and it was really successful training.

'The Reading Conference will be a follow-up event when local and visiting authors will provide workshops and talks to the ambassadors to build upon the skills they have just developed.

'The whole project is being led by the Brooke Weston Teaching School Alliance as part of our DfE Strategic School Improvement Fund project so we will continue to monitor  outcomes over the coming months to gauge its impact on so many schools across the region.’
