Chess Success for BWA Students

Brooke Weston Academy hosted a nail-biting chess tournament against talented players from Corby Technical School. The competition comprised of ten players from each school, all of whom played each other in a round robin format with games timed at six minutes each.

Players were awarded 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 point for a loss. There were two ways for players to win a game: through checkmate or by adding up the point values of pieces they captured from the board. At the end of the tournament, the scores were tallied up and BWA pipped CTS to the winning post by just 1 point.

Assistant Librarian Mr Holton, who organised the tournament said, ‘Our students performed brilliantly. They kept a high level through each game and showed great sportsmanship win or lose. All of them should feel proud of their conduct - and I'd apply that to the CTS players too. ‘

‘It was a very tight win for BWA. We scored 200 points and CTS scored 199 points so it literally couldn't have been any closer! It feels good to have won back the BW chess trophy for the library - CTS have held it since they won our last tournament in 2019. Huge congratulations to my team for bringing it back home!’

CTS Librarian Miss Kidner said, ‘All the students performed well, and it was a very close competition! CTS had a great time, and we are looking forward to a rematch next year. Well done to all the players and a big thank you to Mr Holton for organising the event!’
