BWA is hosting a series of activities to celebrate World Book Day
As part of World Book Day (WBD) and Brooke Weston Academy’s ongoing commitment to developing a life-long love of reading, we are hosting a series of activities to help celebrate the event.
Students and staff are invited to dress up on Thursday 2nd March as their favourite book character. We encourage creativity with costumes and props rather than expensive purpose made costumes and there will be competitions for the best costumes on the day. Please note that this is not a mufti day and those who decide not to dress up should wear their normal uniform.
Students will be taking part in reading, writing and oracy activities throughout the academic day with the promotion of reading for pleasure to scaffold literacy, evoke empathy and support well-being.
Brooke Weston Academy is also holding a Scholastic Book Fair in the library from Tuesday 21st until Monday 27th February ahead of WBD. Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase books as well as stationery. Every book sold at the Book Fair will help to earn free books for our school!
There is also a ‘Design a Book Cover’ competition for Year 7 and 8. Information and templates are available from the library. Closing date for competition entries is Friday 24th February. Three winners will each win a book of their choice from the Book Fair.
World Book Day’s mission is ‘to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books by giving them the chance to have a book of their own.’
This year, a new single-use digital version of the £1 WBD token can be printed at home, or scanned at the checkout of participating booksellers where they can be swapped for one of the £1 World Book Day books for FREE or use the token to get £1 off any book or audiobook worth £2.99 or more. Download your £1 WBD token here.
Students can also collect a £1 WBD token from the school library if they are unable to access the digital version. The book tokens are valid from Thursday 16 February to Sunday 26 March 2023.
Students who would like to get their hands on one of the free books, but are unsure which one to choose can find out more about the FREE £1 World Book Day books here.
Lauren Fitzjohn, Literacy Co-ordinator at BWA said, ‘We encourage everyone to get involved in the events leading up to the day, and on World Book Day. This is a great opportunity to discuss the importance of reading and encourage reading at home. Ideally, students should be reading for 20 minutes a day, which equates to approximately 3600 minutes a school year and an astonishing 1,800,000 words!’
