  • Mr Chambers launches Young Game Designers competition in London on behalf of BAFTA

    IT teacher Ray Chambers was invited to attend the BETT education show to launch the 2017 Young Game Designers competition on behalf of BAFTA - British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

    Ray who previously won the Young Game Designers for mentoring students in coding was asked by BAFTA to assist them with the content of this years YGD and launched the competition nationally with The Gadget Show’s Jason Bradbury.

    BAFTA is the leading British charity that supports, promotes and develops the film, television and games industry. YGD gives an insight into the gaming world as well the chance to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences with top game makers through their annual competition.

  • Academy welcomes Crown Court judge

    Brooke Weston Academy was delighted to welcome His Honour Judge Rupert Mayo into the school to give advice and answer questions from students interested in a career in law.

    Judge Mayo, was a barrister for 21 years and took up his present position over eight years ago and he has been Resident Judge at Northampton since 2011.

    Judge Mayo had a tour, hosted a Q&A with Year 13 students who have applied to do law or law enforcement and gave advice to Year 11 and 12 students who were thinking about careers in law. He said ‘I wanted to come to Brooke Weston to help students learn and understand about law. It underpins a lot of what we do and you don’t have to be a professional lawyer in order to be involved in law. Nowadays it’s very expensive to go to university and not impressive if you start on one degree and decide to change to another, so the more information students can have before they put their choices down the better.

  • Brooke Weston teacher shortlisted for $1m global education award

    Brooke Weston computer science teacher Ray Chambers has been named as one of four UK teachers to be included in the top 50 shortlist for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2017. Now in its third year, the US $1 million award is the largest prize of its kind.

  • Those who can teach

    Over the last 10 years training to become a teacher has been changing. Firstly, the routes available to become a teacher have altered significantly. Traditionally students went to university, completed a degree and went on to do a PGCE programme, (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) which involved placements at different schools. Now that’s changed as more innovative ways to bring teachers into the profession are needed. There are still the traditional routes available however now options such as School Direct are proving to be really successful methods of training, not only for the schools involved, but also for the trainees.

  • Introducing Brooke Weston’s new media officer

    Alishia Read has recently taken up the post of media officer for Brooke Weston and two other schools in the Trust. She has had a career in media sales and advertising and, after running her own business with young people, she wanted to make the transition to a school environment.

    Alishia said: ‘I have generally worked in media, sales, advertising and PR. I was working in London in a magazine company before moving up to the area and becoming manager for Image magazine in Northampton for around seven years. I also did marketing in an estate agency then started my own business teaching baby massage, baby yoga and children’s yoga for those aged from three to 12 years so I have a varied skill set that I bring to the job.

  • Welcome to our School Direct trainees

    Welcome to the trainee teachers who are just starting their placements at Brooke Weston as part of the School Direct programme. The year-long course combines university study and school experience and successful candidates will be awarded a PGCE qualification next summer.

    The trainees, specialising in English, maths, science, French and history, are a mix of recent undergraduates and those who have had jobs in other sectors but who want a career change to teaching.

  • BW Prizegiving 2016

    Intrepid explorer and adventurer George Bullard was the guest of honour at our 2016 Prizegiving where he spoke about his latest adventure, kayaking thousands of miles from Greenland to Scotland.

    He and fellow explorer Ollie Hicks paddled 1500 miles from Greenland and ended up 66 days later (and just a fortnight ago) on the beach at Balnakiel Bay on the north of Scotland. They travelled via Iceland and the Faroes and navigated the dreaded Devil’s Dancefloor before becoming marooned on North Rona for a week, surviving on rainwater and wildlife including limpets and sea birds.

  • Mr Chambers accredited as Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator

    IT Teacher Ray Chambers has been accredited as a Microsoft Innovative Expert Educator so he will network with other teachers in the area and share best practice.

    Microsoft said: ‘MIEs are educators that are using Microsoft tools in the classroom and have learned the fundamentals of some of these tools. This is the first step on a journey of joining a professional learning network of enthusiastic educators who come together to learn, share and grow.’
