Year 9 students attend University of Leicester's Crime Scene Investigation Subject Insight Day

The University of Leicester hosted a Crime Scene Investigation Subject Insight Day, offering a group of our Year 9 students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and insight into the field of crime scene investigation while learning about higher education at the university.

Students participated in a variety of Carousel Sessions designed to provide a taste of both academic and practical experiences in Criminology and Law. These sessions were often led by current students sharing their experience of University, as well as university ambassadors. They were challenged to solve the fictional murder of 'Zoe' by completing a series of tasks, including:

  • Law Taster Session: Students explored the fundamentals of legal studies and created narratives based on witness statements for both prosecution and defence teams.
  • Criminology Taster Session: Participants analysed hair DNA, fibres on clothing, and shoe prints to gather evidence.
  • Fingerprinting Workshop: Students gained hands-on experience with forensic techniques in an interactive fingerprinting workshop.
  • Campus Tour: The tour allowed students to explore the campus, get a feel for student life, and visit the staged crime scene.

The day concluded with a debriefing session where students presented their findings and determined that 'Dan' was the murderer based on the evidence collected.

Jake Barwell, said, ‘ The university was fun to explore, and the range of activities allowed us to understand the different things we could do in our future options and careers, as well as letting us have a day out of the normal school curriculum.’

Miss Colquhoun, Director of Digital Strategy, Careers & Work-Related Learning, said, ‘These sessions provided a fantastic way for students to broaden their horizons and gain valuable insights into different fields. This event truly embodies our school's commitment to ambition for all and, by providing such enriching experiences, we aim to inspire our students to reach their full potential and explore diverse career paths. We were proud of the exemplary behaviour and engagement of our students throughout the day.’
