Local MP Visits BWA

BWA welcomes Lee Barron MP for an inspiring Politics session with Year 12 and 13

Brooke Weston Academy was delighted to welcome Lee Barron MP, the Member of Parliament for Corby, for an engaging and insightful session with our A-Level Politics students in Years 12 and 13.

Lee Barron’s visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the role of an MP and the importance of democratic representation. Additionally, it was also a welcome chance to hear Lee's views on specific policy areas and his work since becoming Corby MP last July.

During his visit, Lee delivered a short speech outlining his responsibilities as Corby’s MP and shared reflections on his journey into politics, which began through his involvement in the Trade Union movement. Students were particularly interested in his perspective on how young people can be empowered to participate in politics and make their voices heard.

The highlight of the visit was a dynamic Q&A session, where students posed thoughtful and challenging questions. Topics ranged from Lee’s views on the recent local elections and graduate employment opportunities in Corby, to the principles that guide his voting decisions in Parliament.

Lee was highly impressed by the calibre of questions and the enthusiasm shown by our students. He also took time to meet with BWA Principal, Ms Haworth, expressing a keen interest in returning to the academy to learn more about our outstanding SEND provision.

Humanities teacher Mr Reay said, ‘It was a real pleasure to welcome Lee Barron MP to Brooke Weston Academy. Our students appreciated the thoughtful and honest answers he gave to their questions. This experience has not only enriched their understanding of the role MPs play in our democracy but has also inspired some to consider careers in politics or policymaking. We are very grateful to Lee for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit us, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future. He was genuinely impressed by how articulate and engaged our students were.’
