Year 12 Workshop: Making the most of the summer holidays
Brooke Weston Academy was delighted to welcome Jeff Chilton, Student Recruitment and Widening Participation Officer at Aberystwyth University, to deliver an engaging and informative workshop for our Year 12 students. The session focused on how students can make the most of their summer break in preparation for their final year of sixth form.
The workshop encouraged students to strike a healthy balance between rest and productivity, highlighting the importance of taking time to relax and recharge after a busy academic year. Jeff also guided students through a range of enriching summer activities, including wider subject reading, volunteering, and work experience, all of which can enhance personal development and strengthen future university applications.
A key part of the session was dedicated to Higher Education research and the UCAS application process. Jeff introduced students to the newly revised UCAS personal statement format, which now includes three structured sections with guiding questions. He offered practical advice on how to approach each section effectively, helping students to reflect on their experiences and aspirations with clarity and confidence.
Students left the session feeling inspired and better equipped to use their summer break wisely—whether that means exploring career interests, gaining new skills, or simply taking time to rest before the challenges of Year 13.
