Careers Work Shadowing Event

Year 7 and 8 gain a real-life insight into the world of work

Some of our Year 7 and 8 students took part in a ‘Work Shadowing Day’ to give them an opportunity to gain a real-life insight into the world of work. Students who took part were able to attend the workplace with a parent/carer for the day and get hands-on experience of the world of work away from the classroom.

Students spent the day observing the main day-to-day tasks and getting one-on-one access to a person who has real experience in a specific field of work.

Careers Lead, Amber Colquhoun said, 'Beyond acquiring transferable skills, this initiative serves as a gateway for career exploration, allowing students to make informed decisions about their educational paths. There is also a chance to network, establishing connections with industry professionals and to build confidence speaking to different people. Students see first-hand the importance of punctuality and effective communication, contributing to the professionalism crucial for future success. Students completed a work shadowing logbook to reflect upon their experience and discussed their experience with their peers during tutor time.'

Year 7 Alex Andrade, who spent the day at the Primark Warehouse in Islip, said, ‘I found the experience to be very useful, and I learnt a lot about the different processes involved in all the areas of the warehouse and offices.’

Year 8 Evie Murphy shadowed her parents at Avon Cosmetics in Corby for the day. She said, ‘I spent the day at Avon shadowing my mum in the admin office and my dad in the warehouse. I didn’t realise just how many different jobs there were in one place. I enjoyed being part of a team and after a full day I went home very tired!’

Year 8 Dylan Maddams, said, ‘I shadowed my dad who is a teacher at KSA who was discussing a school trip to Warhammer World with the main museum curator at Warhammer World in Nottingham. I was also able to meet a few authors from the Black Library (Warhammer's publishing company).  I then spent some time talking to Warhammer World staff and observing their professional approach to problem-solving and teamwork.  I found the day very interesting and a valuable experience.’
