Year 10 students enjoy an afternoon with author

Students from Year 10 were invited to attend an afternoon with author Sara Barnard together with two other schools from the Trust at Corby Business Academy.

Sara is a talented British author who has written a number of successful books aimed at young adult readers. Her debut novel, ‘Beautiful Broken Things’ explores the complexity of teenage friendships and features some challenging themes. She has been writing since a young age and gets her love of words from her dad, who made sure she always had a book to read when she was growing up.

During the afternoon Sara gave advice on writing books, highlighted the importance of researching the finer details to ensure authenticity in your writing and explained there is more to writing than just the initial idea, it is the questions that stem from it that create your story. Students also had an opportunity to ask questions and purchase signed copies of her book ‘Beautiful Broken Things’ and her new title ‘A Quiet Kind of Thunder.’

Student Emily Brown said ‘I really enjoyed the afternoon. I liked how she showed us different techniques and tips to produce a book. It was good to listen from a writer’s perspective as to how we could write a book ourselves.’

Ariana Hill said ‘Meeting Sara gave me an insight into how to write bigger books. I had a mini saga book published when I was in Primary school and since then I have wanted to write more books. The talk today helped me understand the process that goes into writing a book from beginning to end.’
