Sixth Form students take time out to ‘breathe’

As part of their PSHE lessons students in Year 12 have been taking part in reflective workshops where they were able to take some time out of their busy first term in the Sixth Form to relax and reflect.

Breathe is an art installation that enables students to think about some of life’s ‘big questions’. Based on a large floor mat and divided into 12 stations, students were given space and structure to think about themselves, other people, the planet and God. Breathe is suitable for students of all faiths and none. It explains something of how Christians answer some of the big questions in life, but encourages and provides space for students to make up their own minds. It enabled the groups to both learn about religion and to learn from religion.

There were five sessions throughout the day each lasting an hour giving students lots of quiet time to reflect on themselves and what is important or concerning them.

Head of Sixth Form Mrs Nina Smith said ‘ The workshops were fantastic as it is always good to have some reflection time. The students have just had their first term in the Sixth Form and are settling in and it can be overwhelming the change from GCSE to A Levels and so it’s nice to take a moment out and reflect on how things are going and what you might want to improve going forwards.’

Director of ‘Breathe’ Kal Budwal said ‘It was good to see so many young people engage with some deep questions about people, ourselves, planet and faith. There were some groups that were so engaged with the sessions and enjoyed learning about their footprint on this planet.’
