What We Do

In Performing Arts, students in Years 7–9 study Dance and Drama on rotation through a carefully sequenced curriculum focused on performance, composition, and appreciation. We then offer GCSE and BTEC courses in Dance and Drama at KS4. Practical work is central to every lesson, supporting the development of analytical writing, critical responses, and use of subject-specific terminology. Schemes of work ensure progression by building on key vocabulary, knowledge, and techniques through a variety of styles, genres, and practitioners. The curriculum is enriched by opportunities to work with professionals, attend live performances, and take part in extra-curricular activities, helping students understand the wider Performing Arts industry. In Drama, the KS3 curriculum exceeds National Curriculum expectations by offering diverse and challenging units that develop creativity, collaboration, devising, and performance skills. In Dance, students go beyond expectations by learning advanced techniques, exploring a range of styles, and developing their own choreography and analytical skills. This provides a strong foundation for study at KS4.

What We Are Proud Of

The Performing Arts department is proud of the inclusive and vibrant culture it fosters, where creativity is celebrated, and every student is encouraged to take part, regardless of experience or background. Students regularly showcase their talents through high-quality performances that are well-attended and valued by the wider school community such as assemblies, showcases and musicals, and this includes performance as well as backstage and tech roles. The department is also proud of the uptake and enthusiasm for peripatetic lessons, which allow students to develop individual musical skills and confidence. Staff work closely with students to support them in exam preparation, auditions, and external opportunities, including local theatre projects, performance events and national competitions. The department is also proud of its collaborative ethos, with Dance, Drama, and Music working together on projects that highlight the full range of students’ creative abilities. With student leadership encouraged, the department encourages independence, responsibility, and a lifelong love for the Performing Arts.

What Our Ambitions Are

As a department, we aim to continue fostering creativity, confidence, and inclusivity by providing a supportive and dynamic environment where students can explore and develop their talents in drama, music, and dance. We are committed to delivering high-quality teaching that not only enhances technical ability but also encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and self-belief. Our goals include increasing student engagement through a wide range of performance opportunities, placing greater emphasis on celebrating student achievement, and strengthening our links with the community through outreach events and collaborative projects. We also seek to celebrate cultural diversity by incorporating global influences into our curriculum and performances. By building stronger partnerships with professional artists and organisations, we aspire to offer students greater real-world insight, inspiration, and access to career advice and opportunities within the arts. Ultimately, our ambition is to nurture passionate, well-rounded individuals who are confident in expressing themselves through the performing arts.
